We made our Copper Road Ale today! This process was a fairly simple and easy process that took less than 4 hours from start to finish. We finished the brewday in the primary fermenter at a 1.052 OG. That will hopefully end us up with a ABV of about 5%, maybe a bit higher. This one will spend a typical amount of time (about 2 weeks) in the fermentation cycle. We will leave it in the bottle at least 3 weeks this time. Past experience has shown that it needs at least 3 weeks at a minimum to become really well tasting.
Our first batch of apple cider didn't turn out exactly like we wanted it to. It tasted more like wine than a cider. So we decided to try another recipe for cider and hope it turns out better :) Since I can't have
the same label for two different kinds of cider, I had to make a new one!! I think it turned out pretty good. Our pumpkin beer was racked this week to the secondary. There was about 3-4 inches of trub on the bottom. But it smelled so good! In the background is the Applefire Cider still in the primary. That one
was done the same week, however, that needs alot more time to ferment due to the yeast we used and the nature of the cider itself. Next week we move on to our Copper Road Ale! That one is more hoppy and has more flavor than some of these others, while not quite being an IPA, its leaning more in that direction. Have anything you'd like to see made or to try something new? We are really loving the brewing and getting really into it. We have hopes and aspirations for much more. But for now, its just the love of doing it and learning all we can. Today, we made our first Pumpkin Beer, we call it Pumpkin Envy Ale. We got to work this evening and it went pretty smoothly overall. We even managed to twist the recipe a bit and make it unique to our own style and I think it will turn out really well. The color of this as seen in the wort looks amazing! ~ Will
Our new goodies arrived today, along with the start of the yummy pumpkin ale!!! I think the bottle tree is cool, but boy does it take up a lot of room!! There are more pics of all the equipment we got on the set up page.
We have really started getting into home brewing. The original start of our new adventure was the starter equipment kit we got for father's day. Irish stout came with the initial starter kit, and the outlook was bleak. Little had I known (because I know nothing of beer!) that stout was the darkest beer ever
and my husband greatly disliked dark beer. Of course we wanted to make it anyway and see how things turned out. And as it turned out, my husband really did like the stout beer. We all had fun making it found that we wanted to make another right away. Well, we have now made 2 different batches, and have the workings of the next three underway. Since I am not a big beer drinker I am going to venture out and work on a hard cider. It will go well with the pumpkin ale we are also making for fall. I have also been busy working on the labels. Hopefully everyone else thinks they look as cool as I think they do. We hope this is just the beginning of our home brewing. We all really enjoy it. ~ Heather |
